HOME :: RESORTS ABROAD :: TURKEY :: Marmaris
Marmaris – is the most beautiful city of the south-west coast of Turkey. It is located on a peninsula, separating the Aegean Sea from the Mediterranean Sea. Amazing golden beaches, sky-blue tender sea, unrepeatable natural landscapes and specific contrasts of a very old and at the same time very modern city are waiting for you here.
Marmaris was founded in the 6 century B.C. and got the name Fiskos. Even in that period the city was known for its trading traditions. In 334 B.C. Fiskos was occupied by the army of Alexander the Great. Eventually it became part of the Byzantine Empire. Later the city was conquered by Seljuks, and after that by Ottomans. In 1522 Sultan Suleiman restored the walls of the city, which were built back in old times and by that time were already considerably destroyed, and gave the city the name Mimaris.
The only memory of the city’s past is the fortress, built back in the times of the Ottoman domination. Its strong and pointed walls with a tower rising over them are clearly seen in the center of the peninsula, extended in the sea. The city is located at the foot of green mountains, on the shores of a gulf bathed by sun rays, where a lot of yacht-clubs found their place and where a lot of splendid cruises start. The pleasant marine climate of this resort creates favorable conditions for tourism practically during the whole year.
A lot of vivid restaurants and cafes located by the shore will not let indifferent any gourmets. Infinite lines of stores, selling carpets and local artisans’ works, are here for connoisseurs of beauty.
Do not miss the opportunity to taste local honey, with an amazing aroma and taste. Visit Marmaris and it will give you a lot of pleasure!
